Every once in a while, we uncover a true time capsule treasure—a survivor vehicle that defies its age. In March of this year, we unearthed a shockingly clean 1961 Series II. This vehicle was a single-owner gem, lovingly maintained, garage-kept, and seldom used except for rare family occasions. With only 12,350 kilometers on the odometer (as verified by the family), it has been meticulously maintained and still sports its original paint.
Under the bonnet, the engine and mechanical components were well-maintained, with all replacement parts being factory originals and without any modifications. The suspension and running gear were equally well-preserved.
After several meetings with the family, we reached an agreement on the purchase. It was difficult for them to let go, but our commitment was to thoughtfully and expertly preserve the heritage and character of this family treasure.
From the start, we knew that this classic survivor needed only light touches. Stripping and fully restoring it would have been a disservice to its authenticity. Our mission was to address safety issues, drivability concerns, and necessary mechanical work.
The interior needed cosmetic attention. We reupholstered the front bench with new springs, padding, and covering, while maintaining its original aesthetic with light leather touches on the canvas-covered bench. Additionally, the headliner and carpeting were replaced, and some metal correction was done in the back bed.
We replaced all gaskets and performed routine maintenance on hubs, differentials, shocks, and springs. While it’s a 63-year-old vehicle, the exterior may hide its age, but some mechanical attention is always necessary.
Thanks to Africa’s dry climate, we have been fortunate to find many 60- and 70-year-old Series Land Rovers that are still roadworthy. Each vehicle we purchase is carefully disassembled and rebuilt to our high restoration standards.
Finding a true survivor like this 1961 Series II is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thanks to the care of a loving family and the work of our skilled craftsmen, the Survivor will continue to live on for another generation to enjoy.
It has been our great pleasure to work on this project. We hope to find a new owner who will understand the importance of this rare opportunity and help us preserve the Land Rover heritage.
